Leyton & Wanstead Focus - April 2011 - Referendum Special

April 22, 2011 12:37 PM

Are you fed up with being let down by politicians?

Vote Yes! 5th May

Make all MPs work harder

Every MP will have to work hard to earn and keep the

support of electors. That's because each MP will

need to win more than half of the votes to be elected.

A stronger voice for you

Ranking candidates in order of preference (1,2,3...)

give you more say - in who wins and who doesn't. If

your favourite doesn't win, you can still have a say.

Tackle MPs' 'jobs for life'

Too many MPs have their "safe seats" for life. Fairer

votes will force complacent politicians to sit up and

listen, and reach out to the communities they are

seeking to represent.

All that can change on Thursday 5 May in the Fairer Votes Referendum.

Save our cheques

The Lib Dem MP for Bradford East, David Ward has

launched a national campaign to save our cheque

following the decision by the banks to abolish the

cheque in 2018.

In December 2009 the Payments Council, a group made up from 28 of the big banks and financial companies announced plans to phase out the cheque.

Charities and vulnerable people will suffer the most Many national organisations have joined the Lib Dem campaign

including Age UK, Which, RNIB, and The Federation of Small Businesses. All have grave concerns that the banks' decision will hurt the most vulnerable including

the disabled, elderly, housebound, charities and many small businesses who rely on cheques. On November 2nd 2010 David Ward MP put forward a bill in

Parliament to make the banks continue offering cheques for as long as customers want them. Local Lib Dem Cllr Liz Phillips said "It is disgusting that a group

with such vested interests in getting rid of cheques should be entrusted with this decision. I hope this bilL will force the banks to listen to the very serious concerns

that many people have about this decision". If you support our campaign to save our cheques please sign the petition below and send to Liz at

53 Sansom Road, Leytonstone, London E11 3HD
