Chair of LGBT+ Lib Dems, Adrian Hyyrylainen-Trett and the first openly HIV+ parliamentary candidate said, "I welcome the new bespoke travel Insurance launched by Emerald Life for the LGBT community and will be advocating their work, and watching with interest as they progress, especially encouraging fellow community members to use their services. It's about time insurers addressed our specific needs as a minority community.
"It was pleasure to be invited to the Emerald Life launch of its new Travel Insurance product earlier this week. The policies, which have been specifically designed around the needs of the LGBT community including HIV status, same-sex families including those with fostered and adopted children, and an confidential online medical screening process for those applying with pre-existing medical conditions, was launched on Monday and is now available to buy online or via a specially trained call centre.
"As someone who has consistently travelled abroad without insurance since being diagnosed with HIV in 2004, thanks to Emerald Life I will now have the option for the first time of confidently declaring my status openly with a provider, and I know it will have no impact on the overall cost of that insurance."
The launch of Emerald Life's Travel Insurance comes as a result of YouGov research which alarmingly revealed that less than half of people from LGBT community have any form of travel cover when going overseas.
The new product responds to community specific issues which general insurers overlook or may not have a modern understand of, including medical conditions such as HIV and Hepatitis C. The unveiling of this product encourages the insurance industry as a whole to look more closely at the the medical evidence of conditions and reflect this in their pricing.
Also including in their travel insurance is a 24-hour helpline should anyone be detained, arrested or assaulted abroad because of their sexuality.
Heidi McCormack, CEO of Emerald life comments that, "Many in the LGBT community don't take insurance seriously, simply because they just don't get a true equality of experience from their insurer."
Steve Wardlaw, Chairman at Emerald Life highlighted, "With more than two million LGBT adults over the age of 30 living in the UK today, I'm afraid second best with insurance is frankly no longer good enough. At Emerald Life, we are committed to delivering a true equality of experience LGBT adults and our travel product is designed to better serve the community."
Emerald Life's new Travel Insurance is available to buy online at www.emeraldlife.co.uk or via their specially trained call centre on 0330 131 9950.
