On the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), the Liberal Democrats have called for concrete action to tackle discrimination, including reform of the Gender Recognition Act, an end to media hostility and international action against oppressive regimes.

Jennie Rigg, Chair of LGBT+ Lib Dems, said "Incidents of LGBT+ phobic speech and incitement seem to be on the rise in 2019, threatening the progress the Liberal Democrats have spearheaded for decades. While Westminster is paralysed by the Tories and Labour arguing over whose Brexit is better, Parliament is passing up opportunities to improve the lives of LGBT+ people.

"We should be tackling the outrage and hate-fuelled media environment which profits from hostility to trans people and providing platforms to bigots. We should be providing PrEP to cut new HIV infections and end the stigma around AIDS. And we absolutely must stand up for schools which implement LGBT+ inclusive, age-appropriate sex and relationships education, to break the generational cycle of discrimination, and arm our children with the knowledge they need to navigage consent in the modern world."

Sir Ed Davey MP said: "This is a day to celebrate our LGBTIQ community - and to dedicate ourselves to championing future battles for equality. I'm proud Liberal Democrats have for decades stood with the community and helped win victories against discrimination, prejudice and hate crimes, but there's still more to do.

"From reform of the Gender Recognition Act to taking on media hostility against trans and intersex people, we need to win hearts and minds - and we will."

In an article for the New Statesman, Jo Swinson MP argues that remaining in the EU is our best way to promote LGBT+ rights:

"[Anne Widdecombe] holds extreme anti-LGBT+ views; she opposed same-sex adoption and the repeal of Section 28, and called for protests over same-sex marriage. Now Farage's party has welcomed her to its regressive campaign."

"It is time to take a clear stand against the bigoted ideologues who yearn for the inequality of the past. Every vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to stop Brexit. It is a vote to stay in the EU and fight together for equality. It is a vote to tackle homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia wherever it exists."
