LGBT+LD Statement on Infringement of LGBT+ Rights in Poland

Originally published by LGBT+ Liberal Democrats

LGBT+ Liberal Democrats stand in solidarity with LGBT+ people and activists in Poland, who are under increasing pressure and hostility from the Polish Government.

As reported by Human Rights Watch and the international media, Polish authorities have become increasingly hostile to LGBT+ people and activists over recent months. This has ranged from inflammatory language, to the arrest of protesters, to the establishment of "LGBT-free zones" by local and regional government.

This hostility has been encouraged by the highest levels of government. Polish President Andrzej Duda has said that the LGBT+ movement is "more destructive" than communism, amongst other inflammatory language.

At the beginning of August, Polish protesters were arrested for hanging rainbow flags off of monuments and statues, and a further 48 were arrested days later for protesting.

The right to protest is a key pillar of human rights, and the rights of LGBT+ people must be defended. We stand in solidarity with LGBT+ activists in Poland and we ask the UK Government, along with supranational and international organisations, to offer public and meaningful support to the LGBT+ people of Poland.

We welcome steps from the EU, who have moved to deny funding to six Polish towns who declare themselves "LGBT-free zones". However, we echo calls from Polish LGBT+ activists that more can be done by European governments to increase pressure on the Polish government on their behalf.

In light of this, we encourage the Liberal Democrats to continue standing in solidarity with LGBT+ people and protesters in Poland, and for all MPs and the UK Government to roundly condemn these infringements of fundamental human rights.

Lib Dem Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Layla Moran said:

"The homophobic, regressive ideology of the Polish government is utterly repugnant and has no place in contemporary society."

"Equality and human rights are at the heart of who Liberal Democrats are as a party. As Foreign Affairs Spokesperson it is therefore my priority to ensure that the UK government is doing all it can to promote and protect these values worldwide."

"President Duda's actions and rhetoric fly in the face of these principles. Boris Johnson must make clear that the UK stands in solidarity with the LGBT+ community in Poland and that we will work with our international partners to bring an end to this repression happening on our doorstep."
